Rebuilding
Services

There is nothing more satisfying than taking an old relic from the past and giving it a new lease on life by rebuilding it. Sometimes a piano is only worth rebuildingbased on the sentiment attached to it, other times it will actually enhance its overall monetary value

Whatever your reason for having it rebuilt, we will give you an honest assessment to help you decided whether or not it is worthwhile pursuing.

Most pianos built in the early part of the 20th century were made during a golden age of piano craftsmanship before the depression forced a number of them into either bankruptcy or to cutting back on the quality of their product.

We offer complete rebuilding services including: refinishing, action rebuilding, pinblock replacement, plate refinishing, restringing, Soundboard replacement and refinishing.

Refinishing

While it is still important that your piano sounds good and plays well, it is also the crown jewel of your living room and will affect its look.

Refinishing your piano will go a long way towards establishing its 'value'

We can provide finish quality from hand rubbed clear gloss to gorgeous satin ebony. We perform the necessary cabinet/veneer repairs to make your new finish 'seamless.' We polish, replate, or replace all cabinet hardware as needed. We can make your piano look like new. We will also install your piano's original decal design.

Soundboards

A soundboard will experience 12 to 15 tons of pressure on it from the downbearing of the strings. And while the material used, which is solid spruce, has the incredible strength to support it, the pressure on it over decades can take its toll on the cells in the wood by having them collapse. The soundboard will loose its crown and consequently, its tone and resonance. Despite what some say, a piano will NOT lose any of its value by replacing the original soundboard with a new one. In fact, the difference in sound that a new soundboard will produce is like night and day and can bring up the piano's value as a musical instrument. When we duplicate the old soundboard for replacement, we use a solid spruce board and quarter sawn ribs that are precrowned.

           .

If you want to achieve the ultimate in tone for your restored piano, a new soundboard is essential.

Pinblocks

A stable pinblock is critical to the "tuneability" of a piano. Over the years, it will react to the changes of climate just as the rest of the wood in the piano and can eventually lose its hold on the tuning pins making the instrument impossible to have a secure tuning. Sometimes a remedy is to simply drive the tuning pins a little deeper or to replace the pins with larger ones that are just one to three sizes bigger.  However, if your pinblock is cracked or separating at the layers, then its time to replace it.

We will remove the old pinblock and replace it with a new one made of rock maple. After the pinblock has been custom fitted and the new tuning pin holes have been drilled we will refinish the plate and install new tuning pins and strings.  Your piano will sound like it just came from the showroom.
